How to mix and master with AI in Ableton Live
The session below mixes and masters a bass-heavy house track with StudioPilot. This page is the written version: every quoted prompt is what was actually said in the session.
1. Name your tracks like you're sending stems to an engineer
“Main bassline. Main organ. Main top loop one. Top loop two. Vocal chop. Crash. Build-up crash.”
Before any AI touches the session, rename everything, and put "main" on whatever belongs at the forefront. Only you know which elements lead and which tuck away; the names are how you tell it. It's exactly what a human engineer would ask about your stems, so label it the way you'd answer.
2. Have it analyse the whole session
“Analyse everything on my Ableton. We are going to be mixing and mastering my track.”
It pulled the full session and returned a problem list in priority order: master chain empty, kick track with no devices at all, sidechain only on the bassline, bass chain bare (no high-pass, EQ, saturation or compression) with kick and bass fighting for the sub, and five tracks sitting at exactly 0 dB. 3. Don't mix into the master
“I don't think we should mix into the master. We should get the mix right first. Let's start with the basics, kick and bass. Also, I have automations on the drum bus group, so keep that in mind.”
Two habits in one prompt: fix the foundations before any master processing, and tell the AI about anything you've changed or automated yourself so it doesn't work from a stale picture of the session. If you move tracks around mid-session, say so and have it review again.
4. Kick and bass foundations, with real numbers
“This is my kick, a hard thumping BV-909, with Kickstart on the bass.”
It measured before it touched anything: the Kickstart duck was at 84% (a hole, not a blend), and it set the bass high-pass at 30 Hz rather than 35 because the track is in D minor and the bass fundamental at D#1 is 39 Hz. That level of reasoning is the difference between mixing by numbers and mixing the actual song.
5. Headroom: peak at -6 dB before mastering
“So we are at minus six. Do we still need that EQ?”
The session was peaking at 1 dB over; the target before mastering is around -6 dB. It levelled the mix down (using a Utility where automation was already living on a fader) and then rebalanced by ear: "I moved the organ up 1 dB." Your ears stay the final judge.
6. Use a WAV as your reference track
“I also have a reference track.”
Drop in a reference and it analyses the tonal balance you're aiming for. Use a WAV, not an MP3. There is simply more detail for the analysis to read.
7. High-pass the returns, the biggest clarity win
“Remove all the unnecessary low end to clean things up.”
Its first move was the reverb and delay returns: "every reverb and delay in your track is currently smearing low end across the whole mix with nothing filtering it. High-passing those at 350 Hz is often the single biggest clarity win in a house mix." Then it went through the top loops at gentler settings (120 Hz), one at a time, verifying each before the next.
8. Plugin order matters
“Top loop one and two already had an EQ on. I did that myself.”
It moved an EQ before a reverb so the reverb never gets fed low end in the first place. Where a device already existed it asked first ("EQ Eight is turned off on top loop one and two, is that for a reason?") instead of steamrolling your decisions.
